Youth ministry, such as the Garnavillo Christian Youth group (GCY), works to foster the personal and spiritual growth of each young person. GCY is open to middle school through high school age youth from various parishes in the community along with kids who do not attend church.
St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo has taken an interest in the youth group and offered them a space to meet, a small budget, and provides assistance with camperships, etc.
GCY organizers were led to form a Christian youth group when they noticed there were several kids in Garnavillo who are not able, or do not have an interest in, the usual activities provided by the Clayton Ridge School District. "As Christians we are called to go out in the community and to love and support our neighbors," said Rozelle Howard, a spokesperson for the group.
The ambitious youth organization had their first meeting one year ago in August, and since that time have provided:
• Juice and donuts at the bus stop the first day of school
• Attended the University of Northern Iowa 24-hour lock-in.
• Went bowling, sledding, hiking, and out for pizza and a movie. • Helped with the Garnavillo Halloween party
• Provided a community walking taco meal and Christmas program
• Attended a retreat at Sugar Creek Bible Camp
The group also has plans to attend the Dirty Feet Retreat at EWALU, and are currently picking and selling sweet corn as a fundraiser.
The late Pastor Harold McMillian's wife, Linda, was instrumental in getting the group started, along with parents, and other volunteers who have stepped forward to help out. "People have been very helpful. All I have to do is ask and someone is there to lend a hand," Rozelle said with appreciation.
Group numbers vary from 5 - 12 depending on the project or activity, and meet formally the last Sunday of the month from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in the St. Peter basement. "We provide refreshments, a Bible study, planning and games," she listed.
GCY works hard at giving back and being part of the community by working together and learning about God. "Most of our activities are geared for ages middle school and high school, however, there have been younger kids involved in the various activities, so if someone is truly interested, we don't turn them away," she noted.
