Warriors come up short against the Trojans
By Willis Patenaude
The Warriors were riding high after a comeback win last week over Tripoli and burst through the “Victory Zone” banner ready to continue the winning trend against the Turkey Valley Trojans Friday night.
The Warriors found themselves in familiar territory after getting off to a slow start, falling behind 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and things did not improve for Central throughout the second quarter, as the Trojans tacked on another 30 points and the Warriors headed into halftime trailing 44-14.
Coming back for the second half, the Warriors looked to pull off another comeback behind the arm of Griffin Hammersland, who threw for 160 yards and rushed for 13 yards and two touchdowns, but two interceptions stalled drives and the Trojans, aided by 375 rushing yards, secured a 58-22 victory.
The Warriors offense rushed for 76 total yards, with Owen Hammersland, rushing for 33 yards on 13 rushes, Preston Kulper went for 18 yards on two carries, and Braxton Bormann had 14 yards on four carries and a touchdown. Mason Loan led the wide receiver group with 75 yards on two receptions, while Owen Hammersland caught two passes for 42 yards.
On defense, the Warriors finished with 55 total tackles and one tackle for a loss. Bormann and Jack Scherf finished with 11 tackles, while Owen Hammersland had eight, and Jullian Singleton finished with six. The special teams for Central received seven kickoffs, running them back for a total of 159 yards and Griffen Hammersland converted two two-point conversions.
The Warriors sit at 1-3 and will travel to take on the 2-2 Waterloo Christian Regents on Friday, September 27th at 7:00pm.
