The Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben Bluegolds saw their 2024 season come to an end this past Friday night when the host and second seeded Cochrane-Fountain City Pirates used a fourth quarter touchdown to rally past the seventh seed Bluegolds 12-7.
S-W-S struck first when Cooper Lomas found Jackson Konichek for a 17-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give the Bluegolds the early lead. Lomas added the extra point kick and the Bluegolds held a 7-0 lead after one quarter. The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the second quarter thanks to an 80-yard touchdown run by Tye Popp. The extra point attempt was no good however, and the Bluegolds remained in front by the score of 7-6.
The defenses settled in and the score remained the same until late in the fourth quarter when the Pirates got a 4-yard touchdown run by Aidan Lisowski with 1:02 remaining in the game to give the hosts their first lead of the game at 12-7. The S-W-S defense responded by stopping the C-FC two-point conversion attempt and leaving the score at 12-7 with a little over a minute remaining in the game.
Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben managed to march down to the Cochrane-Fountain City 34-yard line with 44 seconds remaining in the game but the Pirates intercepted a Bluegolds pass to seal the 12-7 victory for the tri-champions of the Dairyland Conference.
Individual stats for the game were not available as of press time but the Bluegolds finished the season 4-6 overall in their first season in the Six Rivers Conference, with three of the six losses coming to conference champion teams (Ithaca, Potosi/Cassville and Cochrane-Fountain City) and all six losses coming to teams that made the 2024 postseason. The Bluegolds will graduate seven seniors: Tucker DuCharme, Owen Oppriecht, Ruger Paetz, Ben Payne, Francesco Ragosta, Tucker Stluka and Kacper Szygenda.
