The Seneca Volleyball team fell to Ridge & Valley Conference Champion Ithaca Bulldogs in a five-set thriller this past Saturday night in a D5 Regional Championship match at Ithaca High School. The Bulldogs seemingly had the Royals number this fall as the Bulldogs defeated Seneca four times during the course of the season with three of those matches requiring all five sets.
The Royals reached the regional final thanks to a 3-2 win over visiting Wonewoc-Center two nights prior. Seneca won the first two matches 25-21 and 25-12 before Wonewoc came back to win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-16 to set up a deciding fifth set. The Royals won the set 15-12 to claim the 3-2 match victory.
Seneca jumped out to a fast start against the host Bulldogs by winning the first set 25-21 before Ithaca responded by winning the next two sets 25-15 and 25-22. The Royals kept their season alive by winning a high scoring fourth set 30-28 to once again force a winner take-all fifth set, which Ithaca won by outlasting the Royals 15-13. Ithaca’s win snapped a seven-match win streak for the Royals.
Seneca finished their season with an 17-9 overall record and will graduate five seniors: Maya Buffington, Kylie Chambers, Skylette Gilbertson, Ava Sime and Lydia West.
