The 11th Ice Fisheree changed locations in 1961


The Feb. 8, 1961, edition of the Courier Press identifies some of the Fisheree winners, including W. Philebar, Davenport, Iowa; R. Zweiehomer, Postville; E. Jakobs, Clarkville, Iowa; and H. Peterson, Waukon, Iowa. The Press does not specify who is in each picture. The 11th annual Fisheree was considered a success despite a change in location for the first time in the event’s history. Prairie du Chien senior Blake Thiry got a measure of revenge this past Saturday night at the La Crosse Center when he beat undefeated Port Washington junior Garret Kawczynski 4-2 in the championship match of the 215 pound weight class at the 42nd annual Bi-State Classic. Kawczynski (currently the no. 1 ranked wrestler in D1 at 215 pounds in Wisconsin, the 19th ranked wrestler in the nation at 215 pounds by FloWrestling and the 30th ranked wrestler by SI.com) had defeated Thiry in last year’s 215 pound title match by a score of 6-5.

The Boscobel/Wauzeka-Steuben girls wrestling team took part in the second annual Bi-State Classic girls tournament this past weekend at the La Crosse Center and placed 36th out of 75 teams with 53.5 points.

River Ridge boys win own tourney

With victories over Seneca and Iowa-Grant, coach Jim Wagner and his River Ridge boys basketball team took top honors at their own Holiday Tournament last Saturday, and in doing so remained perfect on the season.
The host Timberwolves defeated Seneca, 71-40, and Iowa-Grant, 79-35, in last Saturday’s tournament, improving their season record to 7-0 coming out of the holiday break.
Against Seneca, the Timberwolves held a halftime lead of 37-22 before outscoring their opponent 34-18 in the second half.

Blackhawks sweep tournament

The Prairie du Chien girls basketball team kept their winning ways going last week with a pair of wins at the annual Lewiston Auto Holiday Classic at Winona State University.
The Hawks began their tournament play last Thursday afternoon against the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs. Prairie du Chien came away with a 56-48 victory to improve to 11-0 on the season while P-E-M fell to 7-2.
