Michael R. Burke, 70, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2025, following a war with cancer.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with sharing time at 6:30, on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

William J. “Bill” Blume, 77 of Mineral Point, Wis. and formerly of Colesburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025. 

A visitation and celebration of life will be held on Bill’s birthday, Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Gorgen-McGinley & Ayers Funeral Home, 400 Grace St., Dodgeville, Wis. 53533.

A private family burial will be at the Brown Cemetery in Colesburg at a later date.

American photographer Geroge Steinmetz  examined how the world can meet the rapidly expanding challenge of feeding a global population,  that is expected to reach 9.7 billion by the year 2050, through his Feed the Planet project

It is estimated that the global food supply will have to increase by 60 percent to meet the rising standard of living in rapidly developing nations.

City budget process follows steps to April adoption

The City of Guttenberg is currently in the process of formulating its annual budget for the next fiscal year, which begins on July 1, 2025 and ends June 30, 2026

The process follows steps and deadlines set out by the Iowa legislature and provides several opportunities for residents to weigh in on the budget.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is seeking public comments on a draft Environmental Assessment, or EA, for its proposed Lock and Dam 10 mooring cell project.

The purpose of the project is to construct a mooring cell for navigation vessels to tie off while awaiting passage through the lock on the Upper Mississippi River, upstream of Lock and Dam 10, near Guttenberg.

Art student excels as wildlife artist

Clayton Ridge senior Hailey Gaul, daughter of Tim and Kari Gaul of Guttenberg, has always been interested in art. As a young child, she loved to draw. In the fourth grade, she began taking art classes at the Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center. Hailey enjoyed the variety of art mediums and instruction she received at the after-school program. "It was a great place to experiment with painting, stained glass, and pottery," Hailey commented.

Dedicated athlete and competitive runner Dean Schultz of Clayton has headed outdoors in all kinds of weather for his daily run for the past 46-plus years. 

Schultz started his career in high school when his basketball coach made the team go out for cross-country so they could build endurance.
