Coach Wiley preaches teamwork for Central girls basketball team

After going on postseason runs and reaching the regional finals the last two seasons, Central girls varsity basketball coach Mark Wiley is expecting more of the same this season.

The 14th-year head coach has taken a love of sports, developed at a young age playing ball against his brothers, and used that to transform the program into a regular contender, winning double-digit games nine times and finishing above .500 seven times since the 2007-2008 season, not to mention last year’s stellar 21-4 record that led to a competitive loss in the Class 1A - Region 3 championship game.

After losing seven seniors—most of whom started or saw significant playing time a year ago—the back-to-back Upper Iowa Conference champion MFL MarMac girls basketball team is looking to reload.

“We’ve got a lot of girls who have gotten some quality minutes at the varsity level,” said head coach Jason Winter. “This year, they’re just going to have to play more minutes and be relied upon a lot more than last year.”

That includes senior Kayden Gillitzer and juniors Miranda Lang, Lakota Morrissey and Riley Moreland. The last two are coming off injuries.

This year’s MFL MarMac boys basketball team is admittedly inexperienced, but head coach Eric Dettbarn hopes the Bulldogs can make up for that with athleticism and good attitude.

Although the team is senior-heavy again, with seven, due to a strong 12th-grade class last season that helped propelled the Bulldogs to the top spot in the conference, only Cayden Ball has seen considerable varsity playing time. The guard was honorable mention all-conference a year ago, and will be relied upon to do much of the scoring with junior Cullen McShane, who also brings valuable experience to the group.

A tale of two halves: St. Ansgar rallies past Bulldogs in quarterfinal game

Just like he did throughout the season, running back Cullen McShane made Saints defenders miss Friday night. The junior ran the ball 10 times for 184 yards and a touchdown. The total pushed him to 1,477 yards on the season, surpassing the 1,312 by Brad Mohs in 1980 that was the single season school record.

Karter Decker streaked to the end zone after catching a pass from quarterback Max Havlicek in the first quarter of the Nov. 6 loss to St. Ansgar.

The MFL MarMac football team lost its Nov. 6 Class A quarterfinal game at undefeated St. Ansgar 49-14, closing the book on an unforgettable season.

“I’m extremely proud of these guys,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “Who would’ve thought, at the beginning of the season, we’d be sitting here in the quarterfinals—281 schools in the state of Iowa didn’t get the opportunity we had to play in the quarterfinals. That’s pretty special for the guys to make it that far with only one or two guys who were starters last year on offense. To start this game, we had 10 underclassmen starting on defense against a senior-laden team.”

Setting goals, keeping positive mindset helped Grau reach state level

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau has been a lifelong runner. In seventh grade, she joined the middle cross country team, then kept with the sport as she entered high school this fall.

“I enjoy running a lot,” she said. “It takes your mind off things.”

“And,” she added, “you can set goals for yourself.”

When the season started, Grau admitted running in the state cross country meet wasn’t necessarily on her mind.

Stout defense, physical run game propel MFL MarMac past Ed-Co

MFL MarMac’s ground game was one reason for the team’s 22-14 win over Edgewood-Colesburg on Oct. 30. “Our backs ran hard,” against Ed-Co, said MFL MarMac head coach Dan Anderson, “and the linemen were firing off and doing enough to hold their blocks against a fast, physical team.” Hunter Meyer, shown here blocking for running back Cullen McShane, was part of that effort.

The Bulldog defense, including freshman Wyatt Powell, limited the impact of Ed-Co’s all-state-caliber quarterback Parker Rochford.

The MFL MarMac football team extended its playoff run Oct. 30, using the combination of a stellar defensive effort and physical run game to defeat Edgewood-Colesburg 22-14.

“These are the exciting ones you remember,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “We knew it would be a good game that, if everyone played well, it would be a one-score game. And it was.”

“Too bad one team had to be done,” he added. “These are two really good football teams. I have a little empathy—we’ve been here before. We know what it feels like and it hurts.”

Grau participates in state cross country meet

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau competed in the state cross country meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31, finishing 43rd in the Class 1A race.

She was MFL MarMac’s first cross country athlete to run at state in six years.

“I couldn’t be more proud of her,” said head coach Eric Koenig. “She ran a 21:34 and placed 43rd out of 152 of the top runners in Class 1A in the state. That’s nothing to hang your head about.”

Pensel, Wille earn all-conference honorable mention recognition

Two Central volleyball players—Ava Pensel and Maddy Wille—have received Upper Iowa Conference all-conference honorable mentions.

On the season, Pensel played in 23 matches and started 18 of them, and was the driving force on the offense, leading the team in assists, with 222, and kills, with 27. She also shined defensively, tying for second on the team with seven blocks and coming in third in digs, with 66. When it came to serving, no one did it better than Pensel, who led the Warriors in attempts (193), serve success (165) and serve aces (36). Her 85.5 percent serve efficiency was one of the highest marks on the team.

Grau punches ticket to state cross country

Cadence Weber ran the district course in 25:48.3, putting her in 43rd place.

Kylee Bries and Cody Moses came in 74th and 75th, respectively.

Clare Grau picked a good time to turn in her top finish of the cross country season, placing seventh at the district meet in Guttenberg on Oct. 23, and advancing on to the state contest.

The MFL MarMac freshman posted a time of 21:17.4, 10 seconds faster than her previous season best. She’s the first Bulldog to punch a ticket to state since Hannah Schutte in 2015.

Race conditions on Friday were less than ideal. After being delayed a day due to rain, the meet packed a cold and windy punch for runners.
